Living the dream. It's something everyone strives for their entire life, but I truly feel like I've got it down. Since my 4-month deployments cycle through different seasons, I get to spend my time off doing what I love most- being outside. This summer, I am focused on a number of things, but when I return west in August that priority will be white water rafting.
I got a taste of it when I took my new-to-me 16 foot cataraft Mysticeti (systematic name for Baleen whales) down a section of Hells Canyon earlier this summer. Needless to say, it was an awesome way to spend the week. Good water, good food, and great people. For the rest of the summer I will be guiding throughout Washington state and doing a few trips on the Deschutes River in Oregon. I'll be acting as the host geologist during these trips, but am most looking forward to being on the river for the total solar eclipse. Working as a guide on the river allows me to combine many of my passions in life: being active, meeting new people, teaching local geology, cooking good food, and at the end of the day sitting around with old and new friends, sharing memories. Here's to dreaming bigger and making new memories!
